CSS Reboot

Despite us launching our rebooted site a couple of weeks early, we still support the spirit of the CSS Reboot, where nearly a thousand websites decided to re-launch with new, standards-compliant, CSS-based designs.

Yesterday (1st November) was the reboot date and so far around 360 of the sites have updated the reboot site with screenshots of their new creations.

This kind of event is excellent for promoting standards-based design, which in turn aids things like future-proofing and accessibility. Obviously it's not enough to simply use CSS rather than tables or (please no!) frames for layout, thought is required when actually structuring the code and content semantically, as well as adding things like 'skip to content' links at the top of a page to skip the menus.

Usability

Why consider usability?

Organisations provide sites for business reasons.

People visit sites for specific purposes.

Usable sites support their visitors by enabling them to perform their goals easily and efficiently, and in so doing deliver the businesses goals.

A usable site drives trust and loyalty in the site and the organisation in general.

A site with bad usability is quickly discarded in favour of the more usable competition.

In short: Usability is absolutely critical to a web site's success.

What is Usability?

There are many different definitions of usability, but basically any product that has good usability exhibits these 6 characteristics:

In a short period of time the World Wide Web, with its global reach and versatility, has had a huge impact on the way ordinary people live, work and study.

Disabled people are also ordinary people who happen to have a disability. However, being disabled doesn’t exclude them from the desire for everyday products, information or services.

Both N-E-Ability and Yorkshire Ability play a key role in the One North East and Yorkshire Forward Regional Development Agencies web portals.

These sites are specifically designed to cater for the needs of people with disabilities, their families, friends and supporters.
